Turtles: A Symbol of Cayman Turtles are still a symbol of Cayman: the unofficial mascot is "Sir Turtle," a peg-legged, swashbuckling turtle. The turtle even appears on the Cayman Islands flag. Turtles drew sailors to the region for years in an attempt to prevent scurvy. Their ships visited the islands, slaughtered and salted the turtles to feed the crew.
